Biographical

Guglelmo Pugi worked in Florence, a city that specialised in the production of decorative sculptures in alabaster and marble. His works invariably represent attractive maidens in Middle Eastern costume, with contrasting marble and hard stone, often holding urns, portrait busts, and allegorical and mythological subjects. Although biographical information is rare, his work makes regular appearance in various salerooms. He is known to of flourished in Florence and Fiesole from 1870-1915. A known body of works date through the Art Nouveau period. He along with a Florentine circle of sculptors such as Cesare Lapini, Ferdinando Vichi who all have works signed Galleria Bazzanti. Galleria Bazzanti was a dealer of sculpture in Florence founded by Niccolò and Pietro Bazzanti, both sculptors. They catered primarily to wealthy foreigners experiencing their Grand Tour. These sculptors produced genre groups and copies of Antique and neo-classical sculptures for an international market. A number of works are inscribed G. Pugi.
A bust of Umberto I can be seen in the Piazza omonim a Fiesole.
