Biographical
Guglelmo Pugi worked in Florence, a city that
specialised in the production of decorative sculptures
in alabaster and marble. His works invariably
represent attractive maidens in Middle Eastern
costume, with contrasting marble and hard stone,
often holding urns, portrait busts, and allegorical
and mythological subjects. Although biographical
information is rare, his work makes regular appearance
in various salerooms. He is known to of flourished
in Florence and Fiesole from 1870-1915. A known
body of works date through the Art Nouveau period.
He along with a Florentine circle of sculptors
such as Cesare Lapini, Ferdinando Vichi who all
have works signed Galleria Bazzanti. Galleria
Bazzanti was a dealer of sculpture in Florence
founded by Niccolò and Pietro Bazzanti,
both sculptors. They catered primarily to wealthy
foreigners experiencing their Grand Tour. These
sculptors produced genre groups and copies of
Antique and neo-classical sculptures for an international
market. A number of works are inscribed G. Pugi.
A bust of Umberto I can be seen in the Piazza
omonim a Fiesole.
